Stadtalphabet – Wien von A bis Z
An urban alphabet – Vienna from A to Z
2009
Solo exhibition at the Wien Museum Karlsplatz/Vienna within the Vienna Design Week 2009, on display from 8 October 2009 to 13 June 2010.
Following the Publication Stadtalphabet Wien I have been invited by the Wien Museum to present the city’s various types of scripts and signs, with the emphasis on the greatest variety of typography. Besides 26 photographs (60 x 30 cm) with alphabetical titbits from Vienna, 26 concrete slabs (60 x 60 x 5 cm) with an overall weight of 1.3 tons are presented, in which each letter of the alphabet has been cast. The models for these can be seen on the photographs.
In this monumental alphabet, the history of the city and its transformation in recent decades is engraved. With new types of script taking over public spaces, some of those shown here are already almost extinct. An Urban Alphabet is a historical snapshot, inviting us to walk through Vienna with our eyes truly open.
